Suicide Prevention
At HELPLINE, we first identify what type of call we receive, and we work to get the person on the other end of the line to talk. Verbalizing feelings diffuses emotion. Our volunteers will talk as long as the person needs to talk to help the situation. Although we’re not counselors, there are counselors available, and we refer people to the 1-800-SUICIDE helpline. These types of calls take priority over all other calls. We have two psychologists on staff. We work to identify signs of depression, and we want callers to verbalize what may be triggering negative feelings and talk about what has been going on in their lives.
